Tanzania 13-20.12.2021

Tanzania 13-20.12.2021

Photo safari in Tanzania. Three national parks – Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti

If you have already been watching, frozen in front of your TV set, videos about wild nature of Africa shot by National Geographic, Discovery or Animal Planet, then you can be 99% sure that the movies were shot here, in Tanzania, in the most beautiful national wildlife parks on the African continent.
Ngorongoro Nature Reserve resembles the Lost World from Conan Doyle's novels. Tarangire Park has been chosen by African giants – hundred-year old baobabs and numerous elephant families. And Serengeti is known for its great migration and lion prides. It is on the territory of these three national parks that our trip will take place.

If you are ready to put up with a light rain after lunch but still have the opportunity of watching the most fascinating scenes from the wildlife of the African savanna then this will be the best time to travel to Tanzania.
After completing the safari stage, we suggest that you should join us on the island of Zanzibar and spend four magical days on the azure ocean beaches of the southern part of the island. There will be a variety of activities at your disposal, from watching the emerald horizon to snorkeling, fishing or picnicking on a desert island. The local sea market will be a source of freshest seafood and the cleanest warm ocean will let you relax before going back to the snow-covered cities.
Well, are you ready to make a gift for yourself and your family on New Year's eve?

Tanzania is one of the safest tourist countries in Africa. There has never been a civil war on its territory and the government enjoys the unconditional support of the population. Law enforcement agencies are efficient and numerous. By serving a significant flow of tourists from Europe and the United States, Tanzania has created the best conditions and infrastructure for ecological and adventure tourism on the entire African continent.
Vaccinations. The only mandatory vaccination to enter Tanzania is yellow fever vaccination. Vaccination against yellow fever is carried out no later than 10 days before departure and is contraindicated for pregnant women, people with allergies to antibiotics and egg white.
About malaria. The risk of malaria infection in Tanzania is negligible. Your chances of encountering a malarial mosquito are 0.0022%. However, if you want to stay 100% protected use 20-30% DETA repellents or special drugs for prevention: Melarone, Doxycycline or others. Be sure to consult your doctor before use as these medications can cause serious side effects.
Visa. For Russian and Ukrainian citizens a Tanzanian visa is issued upon arrival at the destination airport. The cost of a 90-day visa is $ 50USD. Residents of other countries will be able to check the visa regime for citizens of their country in the nearest Consulate of Tanzania.

Day 1 13.12. An overnight flight from your city to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).(//)
Day 2 14.12. The group meets at Kilimanjaro International Airport. Group transfer to our hotel in Arusha. Our plan for today is to get enough sleep and to relax after the night flight. (//)
Day 3 15.12. After an early breakfast at the hotel, at 7.30 am our drivers will pick us up in special "safari-mobiles", spacious SUVs with a folding roof adapted for animal observation. There are seven seats in a car but we will only accommodate 4-5 people in each of them. At 10 am we will already be in Tarangire Park which is also called the Valley of the Giants.
Hundreds of giant baobabs, up to one thousand years old, attract numerous elephants to the park. Elephant families strolling slowly among the mighty trees, mother-elephants carefully taking care of their "tiny" cuties, herds of ungulates: zebras, antelopes, gazelles, bulldeer and other animals, followed by predators – lions, leopards, hyenas, jackals – all these will be in front of our eyes. Of all the African five, there are no rhinos here.
Around 1 o'clock we will stop for lunch at a designated place. At 2.00 pm we will set off towards the hotel. It will take us about 2 hours to get there. On the way, we will continue to watch and to shoot animals. Check in, dinner and rest. (B/Lb/D)

Day 4 16.12. Early breakfast (around 6.00 am). At 6.30 we'll leave the hotel. Today our goal is Ngorongoro National Park which is also the crater of an ancient volcano. Transfer time to Ngorongoro crater is about 1.5 hours.
The crater with a diameter of about 20 km was formed millions of years ago when the giant volcano could not support its own weight and fell into a tectonic crevice. The crater, or rather its "sides", create an obstacle to the movement of air masses forming a kind of microclimate. It's always hot and humid there. Grass grows so fast in this tectonic "greenhouse" that herds of ungulates do not have time to eat it. Herds of hoofed animals are followed by predators. There are more of them in Ngorongoro than anywhere else in Africa. It is also home to more than 550 species of birds and 115 species of mammals including elephants, zebras, buffaloes, wildebeest and hippos. This is the only place in Tanzania where you can be more or less guaranteed to see a real black rhino.
Lunch according to yesterday's scheme. By the evening we set off for a hotel located on the edge of the crater. (B/Lb/D)

Day 5 17.12. Early breakfast around 6.30 am, and at 7 o'clock we leave towards Serengeti Park. The journey to the park will take about two hours. Serengeti is a real gem among the national parks of Tanzania and is on the list of the most famous national parks in the world. All of the Big Five of Africa are represented here: the lion, the leopard, the buffalo, the giraffe and the elephant, – and their total number makes Serengeti one of the most unique places on Earth. We will spend three days in this park because its territory is enormous and the number of animals and of various landscapes will allow us to observe the inhabitants of the park in a variety of situations. Overnight in a luxury hotel on the territory of the park. (B/Lb/D)

Day 6 18.12. Serengeti again and a visit to a Masai village. Return to our hotel. (B/Lb/D)

Day 7 19.12. Leaving the hotel at 7.30 am or a bit earlier. Safari in the park until 12.30 pm, then lunch followed by transfer to our hotel in Arusha. Transfer time is about 6.5 hours. The distance from Serengeti Park to Arusha is about 300 km. On our way we will make stops at local markets or souvenir shops. Overnight in our hotel in Arusha. (B/Lb)
Day 8 20.12. Immediately after breakfast, we will travel to the airport. (B//)

List of photographic equipment for those who want to shoot:
  • Long-focus lenses 100-400/150-600 and longer;
  • Camera;
  • Standard zoom 24-70/24-105 in full-frame equivalent;
  • Battery capacity for a day of active shooting and memory cards.
Please, note that if you want to see some animals you will have to leave early in the morning, and at this time it may be quite cool and you won't be able to do without warm clothes.
For safari, you will need:
  • a long-sleeved shirt;
  • a warm sweater or a light jacket (the temperature in Ngorongoro can drop to 0°C in the evening and morning hours);
  • 5-6 t-shirts or tops (preferably, 1 piece for each day of the safari);
  • light cotton pants;
  • shorts;
  • bathing suits/swimming trunks (if the lodges are equipped with a swimming pool);
  • headwear (ideally, a wide-brimmed hat, a panama hat or a cap with a visor).
Keep in mind that while you're driving off-road, ubiquitous dust penetrates through the open windows and roof inside the car, so when choosing clothes you should give preference not to dazzling white, but to inexpressive and unmarkable shades like khaki, and to protect your luggage from dust you should grab a few large plastic garbage bags matching the size of your luggage.
Ideal shoes – light trainers, sandals or flip-flops.
Much depends on the location and the class of the hotel you are going to stay overnight. For example, in Ngorongoro most hotels are located at an altitude of 3000 m where the temperature drops to 0°C at night, so warm clothes will come in handy. Quite on the contrary, it can be hot in sneakers in the central part of Serengeti, and it is much more comfortable to travel in sandals.
It is also recommended to take repellents with you – mosquitoes are usually active in the early morning and at sunset, midges terrorize people close to water, and gadflies feast in the immediate vicinity of animals.
Don't forget about sunscreen lotion! To prevent the equatorial sun from colouring your skin with all shades of an African sunset, choose a product with SPF40 or higher.
It will be good if all your things fit in one travel backpack plus a bag or a big case for your photo equipment! Half the days of the tour we will be travelling by car from one hotel to another. If the size of your luggage makes you place it on the roof of the car you will be deprived of the opportunity of observing animals and shooting them through the folding roof.
Don't take too much!!!
